A carsharing club is an organisation which owns cars and hires them out by the hour or by the day to its members. Last year in UK over 100,000 people were members of car clubs, attracted by the convenience of being able to use a car without the hassle of actually owning one. Carplus, a national charity supporting local car clubs, estimates that if you drove fewer than 6000 miles last year, joining a car club could have saved you £3,500.
SpareWheels is the new locally-owned carsharing club in Dunbar which is a not-for-profit company. It benefits from being part of a wider network of community carsharing clubs giving members access not only to its two cars here in Dunbar, but also to a further 80 cars around the UK. Visit the SpareWheels website for more details.
SpareWheels hopes to be able to acquire a third car towards the end of 2011. This will be located according to demand. Please get in touch if you’d like to put in a vote for your area. Main candidates so far are Belhaven, Stenton or Innerwick.
